The convent's spectacular courtyard could have been the inspiration for Jeremy Bentham's panopticon prison model. Note the remains of the enclosing "cellblock" on the second floor. Many of the nuns exiled here were serving a
life sentence. No doubt the white noise of the fountain and the bougainvilleas lended some solace.
