Dugout Canoes on Lake Atitlan
Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

Dugout canoes on Lake Atitlan are still made in the traditional way, but the shortage of big trees make it necessary to add four boards to the top edge, to gain a little freeboard. The canoes are round on the bottom. It takes a lot of practice because the Maya fishermen fish from a standing position.

The transom is cut away about 2 inches, to leave 2 protruding handles, which come in handy when they haul the boat ashore.
